(Pasadena) – Despite trailing early, Muir solidified their hold on first place in the Pacific League with a 24-17 win over Burbank Friday night at Muir High’s Walton Field.
According to Head Coach John Hardy, the Mustangs (5-3, 5-0) had three games circled on their calendar, the three Pacific League losses they suffered last year. So far, the Mustangs have been true to their word in avenging those losses.
“Our goal was to win every league game and we’ve done that so far,” Said Hardy after the game. “We’re looking forward to a big payback with Arcadia.”
The Bulldogs (5-3, 4-1) took an early lead after Muir got on the board midway through the first quarter with a 37-yard field goal by Bryan Reyes. After getting the ball on their own 20-yard line on a touchback and an offsides penalty, Ryan Meredith connected with Francis Nicks for a 75-yard strike, giving the Bulldogs the 7-3 lead. However in the fourth, quarterback Josh Muema-Washington connected with Mason Taeon for a 59-yard strike that put the Mustangs up 24-14. The Bulldogs had a golden opportunity to close to within three points as they drove to the Mustangs’ four-yard line, but a costly holding penalty a sack and a running play tackled behind the line of scrimmage pushed the ball forced the Bulldogs to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Yervand Umrikyan.
Muema-Washington went 12 of 22 in passing, throwing for 203 yards and a touchdown. Taeon, Burns and Goodman combined for 30 carries and 138 yards. James Williams led the ground game for the Bulldogs, getting 112 yards on 16 carries,. while Pendleton had 85 yards on nine carries in the loss.
