Santa Fe Scores First and Last: Beats Cal 31-21

(Whittier)- The Santa Fe Chiefs had the first score, and the last score, and managed enough in between to get the win over the host Condors at California High Stadium on Friday night.

The Chiefs opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal by Eddie Mendez with 7:51 remaining in the first quarter of play. This field goal proved to be the only score in the opening stanza, and gave the Chiefs a 3-0.

California got into scoring mode in the second quarter. The Condors scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Manny Espinoza with 11:51 remaining in the period. The point after by Eric Amezquita, was good, giving the Condors a 7-3 lead.

The Chiefs answered back, with a scoring pass from quarterback Christian Lara to Justin Retiz, at the 10:10 mark of the second quarter. Mendez added the PAT, which gave the Chiefs a momentary lead, 10-7.

The Condors took control of the quarter at this point, scoring two more touchdowns before the end of the half. The first came on a 31-yard touchdown fling from quarterback Drew Castro to tight end Albert Ramos, with 7:05 remaining in the half. The final score of the half was compliments of senior running back Aaron Garcia, who scored with 4:26 left in the period. Amezquita’s PAT’s were good on both attempts and Cal led 21-10 at the break.

In the second half Santa Fe took control. Actually, Lara took control. The sophomore quarterback scored two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, from one and 17-yards, respectfully. The first score came with 4:50 remaining in the quarter. The second score came just a couple of minutes later, with 2:20 remaining. When quarter number three ended, the Chiefs were in possession of a 24-21 lead.

The final score of the game came in the fourth quarter. With 3:26 to play Lara again found daylight, racing 64-yards to the end zone. This concluded the scoring for the evening, giving the Chiefs a well earned victory.

Next week, the Condors will host the Whittier Cardinals on Friday, while the Chiefs will travel to La Serna for a Thursday evening match-up with the Lancers. Both of these contests are scheduled for kickoff at 7:00PM.
