San Marino Secures Second in Rio

(San Marino) – Ryan Wood amassed 205 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns along with Matt Wofford and Nick Gott as San Marino outgained South Pasadena 282 to 41 yards while rolling to a 43-8 victory over the Tigers Friday night. in the 58th annual Crowley Cup rivalry between the two schools.

Bryan Bednarski (4 runs, 45 yards) swept around back and sprinted northeastward 18-yards to get South Pas a first-down on the initial offensive play of the game, but San Marino stiffened defensively, became virtually impenetrable afterward, and halted the drive, surrendering just 23 yards offense the remainder of the half and 88 in rushing for the entire game.

The Titans honed in on South Pasadena running back Nathan Lee and held him to 22 yards on 10 carries.

Nick Gott (4 rushes, 22 yards, 2 TDs) capped the end of a 6:04, 15 play, 83-yard drive by punching in the first score from three yards with 3:30 left in the opening stanza before Titan strong safety Tyler Spitzer intercepted Tiger quarterback David Madrid on a westbound route to terminate that ensuing series.

San Marino capitalized seven plays and 53 yards later as Wofford (4/6-33 yards passing, 17 carries-89 yards-2 TDs rushing) cashed in from six yards out to make it 14-0. Buddy McCloskey had helped set up that touchdown on an 11-yard catch, followed by a 21-yard run.

The Tigers got on the board with 18 seconds left in the third frame when Madrid found Nico Sullivan for a kneeled bear-hug catch in paydirt. Madrid then reverse-tossed to Lee for a two-point conversion.
With this win, San Marino cemented the Rio Hondo league runner-up spot and will enter into the Mid-Valley division playoffs boasting a solid 9-1 overall record. Second year coach Mike Hobbie is now 16-4 in the regular season for the Titans.
