Another week passed, another week of soccer enjoyed. Couple of ranked teams fell this weekend while another just keeps rolling through the competition. Cal State Dominguez Hills seems to be finding its way while Cal State Northridge had couple of great victories and is ready to make some noise once conference play comes around for the Big West. On the other hand, UC Riverside continues to be UC Riverside while Azusa Pacific had a restful weekend.

Here are this week’s scores:

THURSDAY

#12 UCLA 2 – Cal State Fullerton 1

Celso Alvarez put Fullerton ahead in the 4th minute putting away a rebound and surprising the home crowd with the 1-0 lead. However UCLA’s David Estrada took over the match, finding Evan Raynr in the 38th minute for the tying goal and Shawn Singh in the 65th minute for the game-winner.

FRIDAY

#16 UC Irvine 1 – Saint Mary’s 2 (2 OT)

The Anteaters were upset at home allowing two unanswered goals to Saint Mary’s. After a scoreless first half, Irvine broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute following Jonathan Pietro’s goal.

Saint Mary’s answered right back 10 minutes later tying the game, 1-1, when Erik Rivas put away a cross. The game would go would extend to the 108th minute when Dylan Leslie broke free to put away a through ball for the 2-1 upset.

#18 Loyola Marymount 0 – #15 Michigan State 3

Ranked for the first time since 1996, LMU couldn’t capitalize on their recent success as it was shutout in its first game of the San Diego Nike Invitational. Michigan State got on the board 7 minutes after the opening whistle with a Rubin Bega goal. Bega would later tally another in the 42nd minute, sending his team with a 2-0 lead into the half. The final score came with two minutes left in regulation by Cyrus Saydee.

Cal State Northridge 2 – Tulsa 1

The Matadors came from behind late in the second half at its Prego Italian Express Invitation’s first game in Dallas. Tulsa went ahead in the 57th minute when Hunter Christiansen dribbled through the defense and fired a low corner shot.

Northridge’s Dylan Riley scored in the 75th minute to tie it all up, 1-1, and Kim Sunghyun capped the comeback three minutes later after stealing the ball from the Tulsa keeper and finding the net.

UC Riverside 0 – Florida Gulf Coast 3

The pains didn’t end for the Highlanders as it was shutout in the UNLV Rebel Classic. Westin Valentine opened the scoring sheet for Florida Gulf Coast in the 36th minute with a blast for the first half’s lone goal. FGCU would double the lead in the 73rd minute when Jelani Smith found the back of the net from inside the 18-yarder and Donatto Punyed would finish a cross to the left post to add the final goal in the 82nd minute

#4 Cal State LA 1 – Cal State Monterrey Bay 0 (OT)

The Golden Eagles kept their undefeated season with an Aza Gomez goal. Even though LA outshot their hosts 16-3, it took 98 minutes until Gomez dribbled through the defense to beat the Monterrey Bay goalkeeper for the lone goal of the game.

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2 – San Francisco State 1 (2 OT)

Visiting Dominguez Hills needed a 110th minute penalty kick to take three points from San Francisco. The Gators scored first in the 13th minute for the 1-0 lead but Dominguez Hills would respond in the 43rd minute with a Greg Piechota goal.

The game would go through a scoreless second half and first overtime until the last minute of the second OT when San Francisco was called for a handball in its own 18-yard box. Kevin Gallaugher would step up and bury the PK elevating Dominguez Hills to victory.

Cal Poly Pomona 1 – #10 Sonoma State 3

The Broncos couldn’t handle Sonoma’s offense as they found the back of the net twice in the first half. Cam Vickers’ shot in the 30th minute gave Sonoma the 1-0 lead before Ryan Hall doubled it in the 39th minute, silencing the Pomona crowd.

Cal Poly would get on the board in the 82nd minute following Dustin Suppe’s chip shot over the Sonoma keeper but moments later Brandon De La Cruz put the game away for the Wolves scoring in the 86th minute for the final 3-1 score.

SUNDAY

#16 UC Irvine 2 – Sacramento State 0

After being upset by St. Mary’s, UCI shutout Sacramento State at home with goals at both ends of the clock. Irving Garcia found the back of net in the 7th minute with a give-and-go play giving the Anteaters the 1-0 lead. In the 83rd minute, Spencer Thomas doubled the lead, freeing himself on a breakaway and finding the Sacramento goalkeeper out of position.

#18 Loyola Marymount 3 – #5 Dartmouth 2

The Lions couldn’t have a better start, defeating its second Top 10 ranked opponent this season. Loyola Marymount got on the board in the 44th minute when Steffen Canty gave the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Rafael Baca double the lead in the 52nd minute but Dartnouth’s Daniel Keat brought his team back, scoring in the 76th minute and then again four minutes later, tying the game 2-2. However LMU wouldn’t be denied and Baca hit the back of then again in the 82th minute for the final 3-2 victory.

Cal State Northridge 2 – Southern Methodist 1

Northridge outlasted tourney host SMU with a late goal. The Matadors opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a Cameron Sims blast into the upper left corner. Dylan Riley doubled the lead for Northridge with a well placed header in the 69th minute.

Matador Ruben Rodriguez was ejected in the 77th minute with a hard foul and Leone Cruz capitalized on the man advantage for SMU a minute later cutting the deficit in half. However the Matadors held on the last quarter of hour for the victory.

Cal State Fullerton 2 – Saint Mary’s 1

Fullerton rebounded from the UCLA lost with a come-from-behind victory over Saint Mary’s through Matt Sanders’ goal.

Saint Mary’s struck in the 5th minute after Justin Grider put away a 2v1 breakaway. Shay Spitz tied the match, 1-1, in the 40th minute when his shot was deflected off a SMC defender and past the Gael’s keeper. Sanders completed the comeback with a well placed header off a cross.

 UC Riverside 0 – Illinois-Chicago 3

The Highlanders allowed six goals this weekend with another 3-0 loss to UIC. Charlie Trout scored first in the 26th minute off a 25-yard free kick for Illinois-Chicago. Ivan Stanisavljevic added a second in the 56th minute after dribbling into the box and beating the Riverside keeper. Ian Sarachan ended UIC’s shutout victory with his 69th minute shot finding the right side of goal.

# 4 Cal State LA 2 – San Francisco State 0

The Golden Eagles won its fourth straight after downing host SFSU. A San Francisco own goal gave LA the lead in the 24th minute. Cino Federico tallied his fifth goal of the season finding the net in the 79th minute securing the Golden Eagles’ shutout victory.

Cal Poly Pomona 3 – Humboldt State 0

Miguel Abascal led Cal Poly Pomona with a shutout home victory against Humboldt State. In the 15th minute Dustine Suppe’s header beat the Humboldt State keeper for the 1-0 lead. Abascal took over from there, scoring a 59h minute penalty kick and a 84th minute free kick for the final 3-0 score.

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2 – Cal State Monterrey Bay 0

The Toros traveled north to Seaside and shutout CSUMB with goals by Tyler Petry and Marco Pulido. In the 19th minute Petry found space outside the 18-yard box and rifled a shot over the Otter’s goalkeeper. Late in the second half, Pulido made the best of a free kick and hit the back of the net in the 74th minute to double the lead.

Looking Ahead

Conference play starts for some teams as UC Irvine travels to Harder Stadium to face UC Santa Barbara in a rematch of the 2008 Big West Tournament Final. There is plenty of local soccer to be enjoyed as all the CCAA schools stay close by. Cal State LA will try to stay undefeated facing their cross town rivals while Azusa Pacific is working to get back to a National Championship.
