Arroyo HC Jim Singiser and the Knights have been awesome the week after starting 2-0

Good Afternoon!

So the City of Walnut finally gave in…amazing is the effect of a 9-million dollar palm greasing on local politicians…

The good news? It wasn’t my 9-million (I have that in the bank for a rainy day) and Los Angeles Stadium gets built. Good for John Semcken, good for Ed Roski, great for the southland and the pending return of the NFL.

On this date in 1975 Arcadia center Todd Michero caught a deflected pass, intended for receiver Perry Smith, in the end zone to give the Apaches a 13-12 victory over Temple City in “The Brawl for the Mall”. Michero’s touchdown came in the third quarter but the Rams were stopped on their next three series thanks to an Arcadia defense led by Dave Anderson and his 15 unassisted tackles.

TC took a 12-0 lead in the first half on a 30-yard hook up between quarterback Don Stockham and running back Don Roberts. Mark Sharp scored from a yard out, but both point-afters were missed by Roger Lockie who was subbing for his injured brother Randy.

The Apaches first touchdown came near the end of the second quarter when Smith caught a six-yard pass from Dick Brenner.

Just for fun, did you know if Covina beats Walnut at home on Friday night it will be Colts HC Darryl Thomas’s 79th career victory?

For the 14th time in school history Arroyo has started a season 2-0. In week three games, when 2-0, the Knights are 9-4.

Last Add Arroyo: In 1984, 1985, and 1992 the Knights started the season undefeated and each time they were beaten by Duarte. Arroyo was 6-0 in both ’84 and ’85, and 9-0 in 1992.

Several longtime Temple City fans have informed me that while they fully support Anthony White, they will be rooting for Arcadia this Friday night to support former Rams HC and current Apache assistant Randy Backus. “We respect him and want nothing but the best for him. What was done was shameful.”

“This is a bigger deal than most want to think,” another resident told me straight out.

So my friend Tom Hendricks, big St. Louis Cardinals fan, calls me because he’s excited about the possibility of the Dodgers and Cards going at it in the NLCS. Then he crosses the line by bringing up 1985, game six, and mentioning “He Who Must Not Be Named”…

Post Script: History of “The Brawl for the Mall” at bottom of column.

No truth to the rumor that USC quarterback Mitch Mustain is moonlighting as a waiter at Chili’s these days.

Tip a hat to Hoover for its 16-13 victory over South Pasadena last week. The victory snapped the Tornadoes 21-game losing streak. People inside and outside of Glendale are praising Hoover HC Chris Long for his tireless work ethic. Many believe, including our own Andy Villathedevil, Long is the one to right this ship…of course having a quarterback like A.J. Pule running the offense helps.

Name of the Week: Hoover receiver Elvis Fuentes.

Stay thirsty my friends…
