Burroughs (Burbank) 58, Pasadena Poly 47
Poly’s Panthers brought forth a pair of solid posting forwards in Brad Shanks (20 points, 8 rebounds) and Will Genske (16 points and 6 rebounds) with a bit of flair at point guard by Curtis Toyota, but it wasn’t enough to drive past high-flying Lawrence White and his Burroughs Indians who remain unbeaten in tournament play.
White banged out off the fastbreak and compiled a 16 point, seven rebound, four assist, two steal, and two block resumé for Burroughs, who was led in scoring by inside man Jorge Flores-Pere with 18 points.
Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armenian 48, San Marino 30
San Marino had a difficult time getting in rhythm with two starters deep in foul trouble early, and were dealt single digits in three of the four periods of play by an efficient Ferrahian Armens defense. Holy Martyrs finished each half on lengthy runs and coasted easily late for the win.
The Armens, who defeated Providence and highly regarded Marcus LoVett in this past season’s CIFSS Division 5A playoffs, were led in the first half by top returner Mike Chorlian on seven points, 11 rebounds, and two steals, before he was also woed by fouls. Haig Terterian shouldered the bulk of the scoring burden and finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Garette Verdugo topped on the Titan side with 13 points and a trio of treys, plus seven boards. Their leading scorer so far, Jasper Hwang, was one of the foul bug’s victims, registering zero.
Maranatha 64, Bosco Tech 53
The presence in the post and on the boards from Jalen Jones and Michael DeMeester formed a potent, decisive one-two punch for Maranatha as it held off Bosco Tech to also remain perfect in tournament action.
Jones had 17 points and 21 rebounds. DeMeester scored 14 points and picked up 13 boards with two blocks for the Minutemen, who received a shooting spark off the bench out of Isaac Etter, as he contributed 14 points, which featured four three-pointers.
Peeperdine-bound point guard Jeremy Major, albeit scoring only three points this game, caused plenty of ruckus in the first half upon Bosco Tech as he had five assists and four steals.
Bosco Tech trailed 16-37 at halftime and showed no signs of throwing in the towel as the Tigers progressed with a 16-2 run out the break to get back into contention, but woes of its own doing at the charity stripe in the third kept the deficit no lower than seven points.
Maranatha struggled at the basket amidst that run and went without a field goal til receiving two key threes from Etter, including a buzzer-beater at stanza’s end, to enter the fourth with a 13-point lead.
Adrian Nguyen took advantage of multiple Maranatha turnovers for the Tigers and dashed off for five breakaway steal-and-baskets before finishing with 17 points. Steven Lara chipped in a decent second half for ‘Tech on six points, three each of steals, assists, and caroms. Dylan Dario and Andrew Chan both scored a dozen points for the Tigers
