Lobos Late Run Sinks Falcons

(Duarte) – Workman finished with a 14-0 run to overcome an eight point deficit and beat Duarte 46-40 Friday night in Montview League action.

The Falcons hit seven three pointers in the second half including one by Tony Morales that gave Duarte a 40-32 led with just over three minutes left in the game. But the Falcons never scored again while the Lobos ran off the last 14 points to improve to 9-0 in league and 20-1 overall.

“Give them credit. They came out with aggressiveness and we came out flat and lackadaisical,” said Workman Coach Martin Flores. “Hopefully that was a wake up call letting us know we have to come out and play a complete game.”

Both teams hit the floor cold in the first quarter as Workman came out with a 10-7 lead. It was more of the same in the second as shots continued to clank off the rim. Duarte was just two of 14 in the second and the Lobos hit just three field goals and went into the break up 18-15.

Workman went up by six in the third but Duarte stormed back with the three ball. Jaime Almaguer hit a pair of threes and Tony Morales and Marcus Lewis also hit from long distance to cut the Lobo lead to 28-27 after the third quarter.

Duarte came out firing in the fourth. A 13-4 run gave the Falcons a 40-32 advantage. Victor Nureldeen, Almaguer and  Morales all hit threes in the run. The Lobos responded however with 14 consecutive points to put it away. Duarte was down by just two and had the ball with just six seconds left to play but Garcia stole the ball got fouled and nailed two free throws to ice it.

“We needed to get in there and make stops and that’s just what we did,” Flores said of the fourth quarter run. “We started reading (what they were doing) and played more focused.

Garcia led the team with 14, JP Rodriguez scored nine and Mario Macias added eight. For Duarte Almaguer and Morales both scored in double figures with 12 and 11 respectively.

Duarte fell to 1-4 in league and 4-9 overall.
