Rebels Topple Panthers

By Corey Kowk
Flintridge Prep triggered itself to a sluggish start from the field, leading 8-4 after one period, before gaining its stride transitionally rolling into halftime and putting the game in the refrigerator beneath several lengthy second half runs to easily defeat Pasadena Poly 53-28 in a meeting of arch rivals in the Prep League Saturday.
The Rebels, having avoided an upset Friday night by squeaking past Rio Hondo Prep to seal an outright Prep league championship, received a game high 27 points over a brisk 11 of 17 (64.7 %) shooting mark from Robert Cartwright, and a 13 point-13 rebound double double out of Chadd Cosse. Jedrick Eugenio (6) hit a pair of 3-pointers, and freshman Andrew Tsangeos also chipped in with a half-dozen. Harrison Jung had a free throw to round out the Rebels’ scoring, while Kyle Hamane dished out four assists, and Kareem Ismail secured nine boards and a block.
Curtis Toyota heated up in the third for two bombs and all eight of his points to bring Poly within 13, but the Rebels’ Cartwright answered in a quick blur on a three and an inside finish off his own steal to end the third stanza. The Rebels’ defense forced 15 turnovers.
Will Genske pounded the paint for a team high 10 points to the Panthers. Brad Shanks had a bleak night bucketing (1 of 10 FG, lone hit was a 3-pointer) but added five rebounds and a block.
Flintridge Prep returns home to its cozy fieldhouse Thursday evening in an attempt to cap a perfect Prep league campaign with its regular season finale and rematch against Poly. Game time is 7:30pm.
