Top Five Returning Mid-Valley Division Quarterbacks

San Gabriel quarterback Marqus Valenzuela

(We wanted to go ten, but this group is not ten deep right now. Anyone else added to the list would have been savaged by the exceptionally cruel posters. So we went with five. Of the 32 schools in the division, 21 are looking for new starting quarterbacks. After these top five, perhaps only three or four other positions are settled.)

1.) Marqus Valenzuela (San Gabriel SR) 6-0 160: Passing Yards—3,190 21Tds 10Ints

Note: Since the start of the century SG has become an assembly line for quarterbacks. Valenzuela is the latest model.

2.) Andre Nunez (Sierra Canyon SR) 6-1 195: Passing Yards—2,308 26Tds 3Ints

Note: When the chips were down it wasn’t the Trailblazers running game, but this underrated passer who got it done a year ago.

***

3.) Josh Avila (San Dimas SR) 5-11 165: Passing Yards—1,129 16Tds 4Ints

Note: Threw more touchdown passes than any QB Zernickow has had at San Dimas. Jake Payton is back, key elements of the offensive line return, 2013 could be “The Year of the Avila”.

***

4.) Elijah Peters (Gabrielino JR) 6-2 175: Passing Yards—1,662 14Tds 3Ints

Note: Nice sophomore season, good receivers to throw to…Except those guys are gone. The offensive line will be rebuilt…Next fall is going to be real interesting.

***

5.) Connor Simpson (Windward SR) 6-3 193: Passing Yards—1,275 12Tds 10Ints

Note: This guy has a pair of deluxe offensive linemen (see Roy Hemsley) and toughed out a solid 2012. It should pay off this coming fall.
