Bonita Bearcats 3 – Carter Lions 1

Bonita broke through in the fifth inning with all three runs it needed to overcome a 1-0 deficit and prevail over Carter of Rialto 3-1 in second round action of the Dick’s Sporting Goods tournament.

Southpaw pitcher Jon Reid pitched six strong innings, giving up one run and two hits while striking out seven to earn the win for the Bearcats. Chad Hockin shut the door on the Lions and finished with consecutive strikeouts for the save.
Bonita trailed 1-0 in the second inning when Jesse Gonzalez lined his first pitch over third to the left field lawn and past the foul pole for a ground rule double before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Luis Hernandez. The Bearcats had cleared just one batted ball – a single by Jake Blunt in the first – heading into the fifth.
Cory Kurkierewicz started the fifth inning rally with a single over the 6-hole before Austin McGilvra bunted him over to second. Victor Magallanes then ran for Cory and scored the tying run one Joe Willard single later as Joe Quire grounded into a fielder’s choice (Willard forced out).
Quire stole second, and Justin Row was hit by pitch, before these two moved to third and second on a wild pitch. The Bearcats had finally made big inroads against a tough pitcher in Richard Brotzman, who was pulled with two outs.
After taking a 2-0 count on relief pitcher John Landazuri, the Bearcats’ Jake Blunt delivered in the clutch, crushing a shot up center for a two run double that put Bonita ahead for good.
