Titans Win Ugly, 21-6

By Jim Naysium

(Cantwell) – A strong second half from Stevie Yortsos and Benny Hung kept the Titans perfect as they escaped with a 21-6 victory over the Cantwell Cardinals Friday night.

The Titans offense could get not move the ball in the first half, accounting for only 71 total yards. Luckily for them Cantwell could not capitalize, managing only 6 points on a 10 yard pass from Christian Espinoza to Mario Rodriguez.

Stevie Yortsos gave the Titans a shot of life to start the second half by picking off an Espinoza pass and returning it for a touchdown. An inadvertent whistle, one of many mistakes by the referees, nullified the touchdown and gave the Titans the ball at the Cantwell 20. The Titans capitalized and the extra point gave them the lead.

On their next possession the Titans scored again on Hung’s second touchdown to take a 14-6 lead. Two questionable calls nullified two Cantwell touchdowns and a missed field goal gave the Titans the ball back on their own 20. Benny Hung then went to work on the Cantwell defense.

On second down Hung broke a 35 yard gain to put the Titans in Cardinal territory. Four plays later, Hung took a handoff at the 21 and raced to the end zone for the final margin.

The game was played sloppy by both sides, as they combined for seven turnovers. One five play sequence in the fourth quarter went fumble lost, interception, 0 yard run, fumble lost, interception. The Titans were lucky to escape with the win and go on to face the 2-2 San Gabriel Matadors, coming off a bye week.
