(San Gabriel) – Quarterback Marqus Valenzuela checked out of San Gabriel Friday sources confirmed. Valenzuela threw for over 3100 yards last year as a junior to go along with 21 touchdowns and was being counted on by new head coach JD Thompson to be the starter. At this time Valenzuela’s destination is unknown.

Thompson took over for Jude Oliva, who is now the the HC at Maranatha. Valenzuela is just the latest player to leave San Gabriel. Running back Joseph Mayorga, also a senior, left San Gabriel earlier this year and is now enrolled at San Dimas. Mayorga rushed for 771 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging over six yards per carry last season for the Matadors.

Mayorga could become the feature back now that Jake Payton is reportedly set to leave the Saints. Upland has been rumored to be Payton’s next stop.

Notes: Today was Oliva’s last day on campus at San Gabriel. After three years as the Matadors HC and years spent honing his craft on Keith Jones staff, he begins the new chapter in his life at Maranatha.

Monrovia is out and preparing for defense of their three straight Mid-Valley Division titles. “We’ll be just fine, ” said assistant Mike Minter. ‘Right now some of our players aren’t out for spring ball because they’re taking care of business in the classroom. We want to make sure everybody is ready to go.”

The entire Monrovia coaching staff is back in force including former head coach Steve Garrison. What did Garrison have to say? “Who’s running this drill anyway?” Garrison yelled to Minter as he was still talking to me. “Let’s go!” Still a coach to the end.
