Colts Comeback Against Wildcats

(Hacienda Heights)-Covina edged out Wilson 21-17 in a non-league bout Friday night.

Wilson (3-2) started the game off with a bang jumping out to a 17 to nothing lead by the 6:08 mark in the second quarter, only to be held scoreless for the rest of the game. A combination of good defensive stops and mistakes held the Wildcats down for the rest of the night.

Wilson started the scoring a 24 yard field goal by Hector Dominguez with only six seconds left in the first quarter. They followed that score with two touchdowns on consecutive drives in the beginning of the second.

Sophomore quarterback Brandon Schrimen, in his first start, connected with both Josh Nelson and George Czarnick for touchdowns and it looked like Wilson was going to roll.

In less than a minute, however, Covina (2-3) got on the board on Billy Livingston’s 65-yard bomb to Remontay McClain.

From this point on the Colts rallied using the diverse running game of Sebastian Duran and airing the ball out with the arm of Billy Livingston. They scored one more time in the first half on a seven yard dash up the middle by Duran but missed the extra point, making the score at the break, Wildcats 17 Colts 13.

Wilson started the second half with the ball, but was forced to punt after a sack on third down.

After a nice return, Covina was set up with the ball on the Wildcat 38 yard line. On the first play Livingston threw a strike right into the arms of Duran who scampered into the end zone, after a successful two point conversion, the Colts had a 21-17 lead.

Wilson showed signs of life early in the fourth when they took possession at the 50. For about 10 seconds everyone thought Wilson retook the lead on a double pass, but it was called back on an illegal forward pass because the Wildcats’ Moses Vega stepped across the line of scrimmage. After the penalty Wilson wasn’t able to do anything productive as the emotion drained out of them. And the curtain fell.

Covina goes on the road to Baldwin Park in its league opener, while Wilson stays at home to play Los Altos in Miramonte League starter.
