(La Cañada) – Arroyo let multiple leads slip away before sealing a victory over La Cañada, 31-27, Friday night.

“We knew tonight’s game was going to be as slugfest,” said Arroyo Head Coach Jim Singiser.    “But our guys didn’t fold. They kept banging away and kept making plays.”

Running back Mikey Vasquez wore out his cleats, rushing 22 times with two catches for 266 total yards and three touchdowns. Knights quarterback, Steven Rivera, made his presence felt, going 19 of 30 for 169-yards.

Arroyo got on the board thanks to a La Cañada muffed punt return at its own 35. Moments later Vasquez ran 11-yards into the end zone for the 7-0 lead.

The Spartans answered immediately. LC quarterback Rocky Moore found John Hanson for a 52-yard touchdown. Hanson found open space along the sideline to tie it at 7-7.

The Knights retook the lead early in the second quarter. Hunter Duran dodged several tackles and ran 80-yards, giving his team the lead and keeping the Spartan faithful silent.

La Cañada tied the game once again with an 85-yard drive that ended with Daleep Sandhu’s 6-yard rushing touchdown.

However Arroyo retook the lead, 21-14, on its next possession which included a Vasquez 37-yard run, setting up his second touchdown from four-yards out.

Arroyo added a field goal in the half’s final seconds and lead 24-14.

In the fourth quarter, Spartan Scott Gray took Moore’s pass in traffic and into the end zone for the 29-yard touchdown, cutting the Knight’s lead 24-21.

On Arroyo’s ensuing possession, Vasquez took the ball, cut his defender to the outside and ran untouched for a 65-yard touchdown and a 31-21 lead. “He just runs hard. He’s a tough guy and never stops turning his legs,” said Singiser of his running back

La Cañada still had some life in them as Moore found a wide open Michael Arkfeld for a 4-yard touchdown cutting the lead 31-27. Yet, after swapping possessions, the Spartans failed to convert in the last seconds of the match.

Arroyo starts league play next week against defending league champion Rosemead, and according to Singiser, there is still a lot of work t be done.
