(La Mirada) – La Habra jumped out to a 28-6 first half lead and then had to hold on to beat La Mirada 35-26 Friday night on the Matadores home field.
La Mirada cut the La Habra lead to 28-26 in the fourth quarter but Matadore quarterback Kevin Dillman was intercepted by Alex Bush and the Highlanders cashed in the turnover with a game clinching touchdown.
***Bush returned the pick 46 yards down to the Matadore eighth yard line. three plays later Greg Gaines slammed into the end zone from a yard out to ice it for La Habra.
***After La Mirada scored first on a field goal, La Habra needed just one play to take the lead on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Eric Barriere to Elijah Carter.
***Barriere’s third second TD strike- a 41 yard pass to Nick Gutierrez with just 16 seconds left in the half-gave La Habra a 28-6 lead.
***La Mirada got right back in it in the third quarter on two touchdown runs by Adam Carrasco.
***Barriere completed 12 of 16 for 222 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw an interception.
***Carter caught five balls for 122 yards and a touchdown.
***Dillman had a big second half and finished 20 of 31 for 215 yards and the costly interception. Dallis Todd had ten receptions for 120 yards.
***Carlos Martin sustained the La Habra running attack with 18 carries for 73 yards.
***La Mirada is now 0-2 and it doesn’t get any eaiser next week against Servite.
***La Habra improved to 2-0 and will face St. Paul next week.
