(Allendale, MI) – Terrell Watson ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns but it wsn’t enough as Azusa Pacific fell to Grand Valley State 38-17 Saturday night in the season opener. Watson became the the eighth APU rusher all time to surpass 200o rushing yards in a career.

The Cougars turned the ball over twice in the first quarter and they proved to be costly as Grand Valley took advantage jumping out to a 24-0 halftime lead. Watson scored twice in the third to cut the lead to 31-17 but that was as close as APU got.

***Watson moved from 11th to 8th on the Cougars career rushing list.

***Grand Valley State is the winningest football porgram in NCAA Division II history.

***The two teams will also open the season next year when APU hosts Grand Valley State in September.

***Starting Cougar quarterback Dasmen Stewart was 8 of 21 for 81 yards and 3 interceptions.

***Nick Owens replaced Stewart and completed 7 of 8 for 62 yards.

***Michael Ratay rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns for Grand Valley State.

***13,659 fans were on hand to see the game at Lubbers Stadium.

***The Cougars were down 31-0 early in the third before scoring 17 straight points.

***Despite the 21 point difference, Grand Valley State had only 23 more yards than APU- 362-329.

***Azusa Pacific travels to Dixie State in Utah next Saturday night.
