Another big game for Terrell Watson
(St. George, UT) – Terrell Watson rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns and Nick Owens threw for 163 yards to lead Azusa Pacific to a 36-20 win over Dixie State Saturday night at Hansen Stadium.
The game was halted early in the second quarter and delayed two hours and 14 minutes due to a lightning storm that swept through. APU lead 6-0 when play was stopped with just over 14 minutes left in the first half. The Cougars then opened up a 26-7 advantage at halftime.
***Watson scored on a 54 yard run in the first quarter to put the Cougars up 6-0. His other TD was a 10 yard jaunt in the third which gave Azusa Pacific an insurmountable 33-7 lead.
***Owens completed 14 of 17 with no interceptions and also ran for a score.
***The Cougars piled up 391 yards of total offense. Dixie State, despite the 16 point loss had 380.
***Owens’ touchdown passes both came in the second quarter. He hit Mike Martens for a 17 yard score and Tanner Henry for a 23 yard strike in the left corner.
The APU D kept the Dixie State ground game in check.
***Martens caught six passes for 92 yards.
***APU led 36-7 in the fourth quarter before Dixie State scored two late touchdowns. Both were touchdown passes were by backup quarterback Brady Garr.
***APU had five sacks in the contest.
*** “We really responded after the weather delay. We were really in sync. I have to give credit to our O-line. They really stepped up,” Owens said.
*** “We have a lot of weapons now on offense. But they do need more experience. On defense we need to take that next step.” – APU HC Victor Santa Cruz.
*** “Azusa Pacific improved to 1-1 with the victory while Dixie State dropped to 0-2.
