(Glendora) – Azusa Pacific broke a scoreless tie at halftime and scored all 28 points in the second half to roll to a 28-2 win over Humboldt State Saturday night at Citrus College. Terrell Watson started the scoring with a 13 yard touchdown run with 8:47 left in the third quarter and Tyler Thornton finished it with a 99 yard return of an interception in the fourth.
It was the defense however that was the story as the Cougars shut out the Lumberjack offense. Three times they stonewalled Humboldt State in the red zone once causing a fumble at the goal line and recovering the ball to prevent a touchdown.
Justin McPherson started at quarterback for the Cougars and completed six of 12 passes for 37 yards. It was APU’s running attack that did in Humboldt. Watson finished with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. Ronald Douglas had a 54-yard TD romp in the third and rushed for 70 yards. Azusa Pacific had 253 yards on the ground on the night.

***Terrell Watson trucked Humboldt free safety Eric Paopao on a second down at the APU 41 late in the second quarter that blew up the stadium and the Cougar sideline.
***In the scoreless first half, Humboldt had 7 first downs, APU 6. Rushing yards: Humboldt 92, APU 91.
***0:15 to play in the third quarter Humboldt’s Nick Ricciardulli coughs up the ball and Cougar linebacker Sean Barber recovers at the Jacks 28.
***APU’s Watson also scored on a one-yard run with 12:22 to play in the fourth for his second touchdown of the night.
***Humboldt State turned the ball over on downs with 9:54 to play in the fourth at the APU 14. Jacks quarterback Kyle Morris’ pass is broken up in the end zone by David Smith and Tyler Thornton.
***On the goal line fumble, Jacks quarterback Kyle Morris completed a pass to Chase Krivashei but he was stripped at the goal line by Thornton and linebacker Sean Barber recovered at the one for APU with 6:00 to play.
***Watson was tackled in the end zone for a safety in the fourth for Humboldt State’s only points of the night.
***Thornton’s pick six is the first for APU since October 30th, 2010 when Jay York returned an interception 43-yards against Southern Oregon.

***The victory improved APU HC Victor Santa Cruz’s record to 35-43 overall. Santa Cruz’s in his eighth at Azusa. Humboldt State HC Rob Smith is now 31-24 overall in his sixth year with the program.
***The win was APU’s first over Humboldt state since 2007 when the Cougars beat the Lumberjacks on the road 27-17.
***Next week Humboldt hosts Dixie State in Arcata, California. Central Washington comes to Glendora to face APU.
