(Montebello) Giovanni Rodriguez booted a 27-yard field goal with :05 seconds left in the game to lift the Schurr Spartans to a 17-15 victory over the California Condors Friday night at Ken Davis Field on the campus of Schurr High School.
The Spartans (0-3) came in to the game looking for thier first win while the Condors were looking to get back in to the winning column after getting beat up last week by Fullerton.
*** Schurr gets on the score board first with 3:16 left in the first quarter on a 10-yard pass from Sal Chavez to Aaron Handy.
*** Jose Aguero got the Spartan’s other score when he picked off an Adam Satti pass and returned it 28-yards to paydirt.
*** The Spartan defense holds and shuts out the Condors for the entire first half.
*** Condor head coach Jim Arnold’s feeling about the first half, “It’s going to be a long season.”
*** Cal gets on the board with 8:02 left in the third period on a gift from Schurr. A bad snap went over the head of Spartan Jacob Ortiz and out of the endzone for a safety.
*** After a five play drive stall at the Schurr 20, Eric Amezquita come on the field and nails a 37-yard field goal for the Condors.
*** Another Amezquita field goal, this time from 47-yards, cuts the Spartan lead to 14-8 with 10:40 left in the fourth.
*** Cal took the lead with 5:48 left in in the final frame on a 21-yard run by Ramon Arias.
*** With 3:11 left to play and a fourth and eight at the Cal 45, Schurr goes for it and gets in on a 26-yard pass from Chavez to Handy.
*** Rodriguez puts the finishing touch on the first with of the 2013 season with the aforementioned field goal.
*** Schurr’s defense held the Cal offense to 133-yards of total offense.
*** The Spartans are at home again next week against the Whittier Cardinals while Cal will go home, re-group and take on the Warren Bears.
