(Covina)- On Friday night at the Covina District Field, the previously winless San Dimas Saints had a field day on the ground, rushing for 342 yards and scoring all six touchdowns through their running game as they beat the previously undefeated Northview Vikings 41-7.

It looked to be an off game for the Vikings after a bad snap on their second play from scrimmage. The Saints recovered the ball and five plays later, took an early lead thanks to a 54-yard burst from senior running back Joesph Mayorga….And he was just getting started.

Mayorga put up astronomical numbers, rushing for 250 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 attempts. When the Saints gave Mayorga the ball, he simply followed his blocking and zoomed down the sideline. Senior running back Fausto Martinez bowled his way into the end zone twice on the night and junior running back Manny Elizalde addd another.

The Vikings had difficulty getting anything going on offense. They turned the ball over twice and punted the ball six times. Their only touchdown came with six minutes left to play in the game.

***San Dimas’ three running backs: Joesph Mayorga – 12 rushes, 250 yards, 3 TDs; Manny Elizalde – two rushes, 56 yards, TD; Fausto Martinez – six rushes, 36 yards, 2 TDs

***The only shot Northview had at scoring before their lone touchdown at the end of the game was a 39-yard field goal from senior kicker Andres Hernandes. He missed it wide left.

***A third of Mayorga’s rushes were for at least 30 yards.

***Northview had only allowed double-digits in points once in their four wins, only allowing 14. They had not scored any less than 28 points in a game this season.

***This game was Valle Vista League opener.

***The Saints have won the previous five matchups against the Vikings. Each of these wins resulted in at least a 24-point deficit; Friday’s win was the biggest deficit since 2010.

***As the first half was coming to a close, junior running back Christeon Blackmon was carried off the field due to an injury. He did not return.

***Northview HC Marcel Perez on the loss: “Everything went wrong tonight. It was just one of those games that we didn’t put together very well. This was a little hiccup. We still have the rest of our league, so we’re looking to play everybody else and we’ll fight for that second spot, I guess.”

***San Dimas HC Bill Zernickow on the win: “You have to get a win. Hopefully we’re able to work some of this momentum next week and clear that four. None of that matters anymore because we’ll get the same seed we would have gotten anyway in the playoffs.”

***San Dimas now leads the series between the two teams 15-13.

***Coach Z on the Saints’ running game and more on their success: “They did a good job. We did a good job blocking for them. We still have a lot of stuff we need to clean up, but every week we’re getting better. This is a young football team and I’m proud of how hard they fought.”
