2.) The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 to clinch the wild card spot. They will face the Cleveland Indians in the AL Wild Card.

3.) Game 2 of the ALDS Oakland A’s series, scheduled to start at 6:07 p.m., causes the game on Sunday between the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers (originally slated for 1p.m. start) to be moved up to 8:35 p.m. (pacific standard time).

4.) On this day in 2006, Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins became the first catcher ever to win the AL batting title. He batted .347.

5.) LeBron James at media day in Miami on his career goal: “I want to be the greatest of all time. It’s that simple… I’m far away from it, but I see the light…”

6.) On this day in 1961, Roger Maris hit his 61st home run, passing Babe Ruth.

7.) New England Patriots Pro Bowl DT Vince Wilfork out for the year with a torn achilles tendon.

8.) Dodgers’ pitcher Clayton Kershaw led MLB in the regular season with a 1.83 ERA. He finished with a 16-9 record and was third in the majors with 232 strikeouts.

9.) New York Giants’ cornerback Antrel Rolle on how the rest of the team’s year looks after starting 0-4: “I believe we can go 12-0 from this point on.”

10). Former Texas quarterback James Street dies at age 65. He led the Longhorns to the national championship in 1969 and to 20 consecutive wins.
