(Covina, Ca) – South Hills avenged their four-point loss to West Covina last season, by winning handily in each team’s San Antonio League opener, 27-6.

The Huskies (4-2, 1-0) defense was impenetrable through out as it allowed 110 yards against the Bulldogs(3-4, 0-1). The defense had only allowed two first downs during the first half.

Offensively, South Hills was led by Geoffrey Vaughns 21 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to tonight Vaughns had only carried the ball 11 times and scored three touchdowns on the season.

It appeared early that West Covina was unable to match the emotion of the Huskies as they were being outplayed in every facet of the game.

South Hills was able to get on the board on their first possession, as Vaughns would cash in from two yards out. The series was highlighted by a 50-yard double reverse pass from Vincent Hernandez to Dakota Behr inside the 15-yard line.

The Bulldogs had their problems early and often during the game as they couldn’t muster much on offense. After a first possession of three and out, West Covina appeared to be driving to cut the Huskies lead to seven with 5:17 remaining in the first quarter only to have a center exchange mishap that saw Neiko Padilla recover the ball on the South Hills

33-yard line.

For the remainder of the half both teams traded punches defensively by holding each offense scoreless going into the half. The Bulldogs were able to stop two Huskies drives in the second quarter to thwart any more damage.

The first stop was a field goal block attempt by Austin Daugherty from 45-yards out. Then as time was winding down in the half, West Covina’s defense was able to withstand three attempts inside the 10-yard line by South Hills.

The Huskies defense continued their domination as they still didn’t allow the Bulldogs past midfield until 7:40 remaining in the game. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that saw West Covina get their third and fourth first down of the game.

South Hills defense put the punctuate mark to their evening when Miles Bevel recovered a Ricky Johnson fumble at the fifty-yard line and returned back for a touchdown to make the score 27-0 with 7:43 to play in the game.
