Montebello Gets Defensive in Bell Gardens

(Bell Gardens) The Montebello Oilers traveled south to Bell Gardens with an agenda of staying unbeaten in the Almont and stake a claim for the top spot in the league. They did just that shutting out the Lancers for three quarters en route to a 29-7 win Friday night.

Bell Gardens was looking to rebound after a tough loss on the road to Schurr which put a damper on the Lancers hopes for back-to-back league titles.

On the other side of the ball, Montebello was looking to continue a three game winning streak in which the outscored their opponents 139-13. The Oilers were successful in their bid seeing little resistance from the Lancers.

*** Carlos China got Montebello on the board first on a 10-yard run that capped an eight play 89-yard drive.

*** Enrique Lozano increased the Oiler lead to 10-0 when he came on the turf and booted a 42-yard field goal when a 13 play drive stalled at the Bell Gardens 25.

*** Lozano struck again with 8:17 left in the second period this time booting an impressive 49-yard bomb through the uprights. The 13-0 lead remained for the remainder of the first half.

*** Isaac Mendibles got Montebello on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 14-yard scamper to paydirt. Edgar Tafoya missed the extra point but the Oilers had a commanding 19-0 lead.

*** Mendibles finished the night gaining 129-yards on 25 carries with the lone touchdown.

*** Montebello put the game out of reach with 10:09 left in the final frame when Angel Hernandez found Michael Juarez in the back of the endzone from five yards away.

*** Bell Gardens got on the board with their lone score with 5:54 left in the game. Erick Galicia got the calle from five yards out and powered his way into the endzone.

*** It was a long night for Lancer quarterback Charles Ontiveros who completed 18 of 37 passes for 182-yards and a costly interception.

*** The final score of the evening came off the boot of Lozano who split the uprights from 48-yards away.

*** Thomas Perchikyan sealed the game for Montebello when he picked off a Ontiveros pass at the Oiler 18 and returned it to teh Bell Gardens 41.

*** Bell Gardens will look to get back on track next week at home against San Gabriel while Montebello will be back at home to face the Alhambra Moors.
