(El Monte) – Joseph “The Count” Mayorga set a school record for most yards rushing in a game as he racked up 322 to lead San Dimas to a 61-28 rout of Arroyo Friday night in the CIF Mid-Valley Divsion Semi Finals. Mayorga scored four touchdowns and also had a 78-yard run down to the two-yard line.
Fausto Martinez also rushed for 215 yards and two scores as the Saints accumulated 627 yards yards on the ground total. Manny Elizalde added 78 yards and two touchdowns.
***Arroyo scored first on a one yard run by Randy Amezcua. Amezcua scored twice for the Knights and rushed for 78 yards overall.
***San Dimas came right back to tie it at seven and needed only four plays to go 68 yards. Mayorga scored on an 18 yard run.
***The Knights had their last lead of the game at 14-7 when they used some trickery. Quarterback Nathan Coto threw to Jesus Calvillo in the flat who hit David Cotero for a 33 yard touchdown pass.
***San Dimas scored three straight touchdowns to go up 28-14 at the half. Mayorga’s 37 yard run put San Dimas up for good at 21-14.
***Saint quarterback Johs Avila threw one pass and it was a 45 yard touchdpown strike to Noah Reep to tie the game at 14.
***Arroyo cut the lead to 35-28 in the third quarter but the Saints scored the last four touchdowns of the game to turn it into a rout.
***San Dimas turned the ball over twice on fumbles while Arroyo turned it over just once – a Coto interception in the fourth quarter by Erick Ware.
***Coto threw for 201 yards, 1 TD and an interception.
***San Dimas scored on nine of its 12 possessions.
***Cotero caught six passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns for Arroyo.
*** “I’m really proud of our guys and we battled the whole way. But we just couldn’t stop them. They do what they do and they do it very well. It didn’t matter what defense we had out there , we couldn’t stop them,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser.
*** “You have to be able to run the ball in the playoffs and we were able to do that. The kids did a good job,” said San Dimas Coach Bill Zernickow.
*** The Saints will host Paraclete in the Mid-Valley Divsion Finals. The Spirits knocked off defending champion Monrovia 22-21 at home.
***Arroyo finished the season at 11-2 and is able to boast about an MVL title and a semi final appearance for the first time since 2004.
***The 61 points was only the second highest output for San Dimas this year. The Saints scored 70 against Baldwin Park on October 11.
