This was an easy one. Although if Frankie Palmer doesn’t throw that touchdown pass to Matthew Rosales to win the Southeast Championship over Norwalk it wouldn’t have been so easy. But the fact is Palmer did make the throw and it was Head Coach Margarito Beltran who allowed it to happen by making the fourth down and four call.
The truth is Beltran made all the right calls in 2013. Every button he pushed was the right one. Everything he touched turned to gold. If you talk to Beltran he’ll give credit to his players, the fans, his assistants, everybody but himself. But it was Beltran that oversaw it all, pulling the strings.
In 2011 Beltran saw his team routed by West Covina in the Southeast Final. In 2012 he suffered another defeat in a heartbreaking loss to Downey. But Beltran motivated his troops, stayed the course and once again led them to the last game.
“It doesn’t matter unless you win it,” Beltran said after the semi final game. Well this time the Lancers did win it and over the last three years La Serna has been the most consistent program in the Division.
La Serna played arguably the toughest non-league schedule in the area and went 3-2. The Lancers beat Westlake, and Vista only to fall to Norco and Los Osos. Talk about a murderers row.
Once league play started, La Serna never lost again running all the way to the championship. All the while Beltran encouraging, coaching and coaxing his team to success. The final game was one of the greatest CIF Finals ever played. Great players, great crowd, great atmosphere, but maybe more than anything great calls over and over again by Beltran.
Beltran himself may have summed it up best after the classic ended and he was victorious. “What two are you talking about? I already forgot about the other two. I’m only thinking about this one.”
We are too coach. And for this one Margarito Beltran is our Coach of the Year.
