La Canada’s Tom Hofman celebrates win #600

(La Canada) – La Canada jumped out to a 20-5 lead to open the game and never trailed in a 73-62 home win over La Salle Friday night. The win was number 600 for La Canada Coach Tom Hofman who is in his 28th year as the Spartans head coach.

“It shows I’m getting old,” Hofman joked. “When you’ve been at one place this long it’s because there have been great kids.  It’s a great community and just great kids. There have been other things that have come up over the years but I always wanted to stay at La Canada High School.”

***Hofman was honored after the game and presented with a plaque recognizing his 600 victories.

***Hofman’ s career record is 600-186 overall and 237-33 in the Rio Hondo League.

***Hofman has won two CIF titles with the most recent coming in 2011.

***Koko Kurdoghlian led the Spartans and was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points including nine in the first quarter.

***La Canada led 22-9 after one and 59-44 at the half.

***La Canada had three other players in double figures as well as Grant Arthur had 14, Jacob Brown scored 12 and Kevin Depriest added 11.

***Conor Williams was the scoring leader for La Salle with 17.

***La Canada hit 13 threes while La Salle hit just four.

*** “This team is really young but they’re getting better every day. That’s what’s invigorating,” Hofman said.

***La Canada’s biggest lead was 19 in the third quarter. La Salle got as close as eight in the fourth.

***Actress Marlee Matlin was on hand to see Hofman’s milestone. Her daughter is on the cheerleader squad.

***La Canada improved to 10-5 overall while La Salle dropped to 5-11. The Spartans open Rio Hondo League play Wednesday at South Pasadena.
