South Hills Sweeps by Nogales

By Corey Kwok

(Nogales HS) – South Hills jumped out to a 28-7 lead and rolled to a 42-17 win over Nogales Friday night in San Antonio League action.

Both teams were off and running in the opening quarter as it took only 30 seconds for three touchdowns to unfold.

The Nobles punted after eight plays and 16 yards from its own 30 on the game’s initial series. The boot was returned by Geoffrey Vaughns 60 yards down the left end to pay dirt, giving the Huskies a 7-0 jumpstart.

Trent Murray caught Austin Daugherty’s kick just in front of the goal line and then, seeing daylight, burst over middle and went the entire 100 yards to score. Diego Lopez’s extra point sailed through the uprights for a 7-7 draw.

Nogales’ fear of God moment soon passed like the wind.

Ify Umodu countered as he carried the kick return 95 yards to the house, giving South Hills the lead for good at 14-7. After Vaughns joined the party in between running it in from 17 yards out to make it 21-7, Umodu then caught a three yard spiral from Jacob Shirley and the Dawgs, with 39 seconds left in the first, led 28-7.

Vaughns, having already scored touchdowns on a punt return and a rush, got a receiving one for a personal triple crown as he gloved a Shirley 28 yard delivery in the second. He totaled 107 offensive yards and another 110 on special teams returns.

Miles Bevel punched in an eight yard run as the third quarter clock expired to round out a Huskie assault that let out five straight TDs after the deadlock.

Nogales chewed up about 11 of the fourth quarter’s 12 minutes as the Nobles strung together a touchdown and field goal.

Murray scooted around right end four yards for a TD and Lopez hit a 31 yard field goal in the final minute.

South Hills won its fifth straight, improving its record to 5-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in San Antonio league play. Nogales drops to 2-5, 0-2 on the year and is still winless in this league since entering it in 2002.
