Division II by The Numbers: How Many Locals Are Playing?

The APU D kept the Dixie State ground game in check.

Division II is very physical. Do you know how many Southeast, Mid-Valley, and Northwest division players are on D-2 rosters?

National Signing Day is the moment when prep football and college football intersect. Sometimes it’s the moment where a dream is fulfilled, often it is the day hopes are crushed.

Mid Valley Sports covers three divisions of high school football: Southeast, Mid-Valley, and Northwest. Add Firebaugh, as the independent, and the total number of high schools comes to 99.

We know a lot of players will go to junior college, some will find their way to D-III/NAIA schools, a handful will receive full ride Division I scholarships, but what about Division II?

In the Los Angeles Area there are only three schools that offer full football scholarships: USC, UCLA, and Azusa Pacific University, which moved into D-2 in 2012.

Maranatha’s Andrew Elffers, Monrovia’s Isaac Miravet, Warren’s Ricky Vichot are some of the names we’ve seen join the Cougars roster, but how many players from the 99 schools in the Mid Valley Sports coverage area are going to play Division II football?

So here we go.

Division II College Football Programs: 148

(15 conferences from California to Maine)

Roster Size: 65

(This is a really conservative number and could easily be pushed to 75. Many schools add names to rosters during the spring and do not remove them.)

Total Number of Division II Football Players (Approximate): 9,620

Number of MVS Coverage Zone Players: 68

(These are players ‘appearing’ on D-2 rosters, it does not reflect playing time. See list of names at bottom of story.)

Percentage of MVS players on Division II Rosters: .007% (68 of 9,620)

***Only 30 D-2 schools of the 148 carry players from the MVS area.

***Only 41 of the 99 high schools in the MVS coverage zone have representation on a D-2 roster.
