Fanview Lite: October 30, 2009

This pic from El Monte at View was taken on October 19, 2001. The Lions beat the Vikes 28-8. The quarterback (#12) is George Alvarez, and the player with the name on his back is View's Carlos Polanco, who had some explosive seasons for Frank Alonzo in the early years of the decade.

Good Afternoon!

When does the NHL start?

Did anyone see Carmelo Anthony’s dunk the other night? Whoa…as a guy who is unfazed by the slam, I have to say I was impressed.

Overs and unders on TC’s Max Ruckle going over a thousand yards on his first carry tonight against Blair?

Speaking of grand rushers; Arroyo’s Mike Vasquez should clear the hurdle next week, Rosemead’s Matt Fregoso in week ten

Did you know while El Monte has only beaten Arroyo six times in the last 50-plus years, three of those wins came while I was at EMHS?

Of course I had nothing to do with any of those victories, I was too busy trying to stay eligible for basketball and attempting to avoid failure in freshman and sophomore English with Ms. Daurio & Ms. Hernandez respectively.

The Lions last win over the Knights? Week nine, 1990, 30-0. The El Monte HC? Tim Campa.

It’s not that I’m anti-Alex Rodriguez, but his going 0 for 8 with six strikeouts in the first two games of the World Series won’t help him with those who are…

Nice to see Shaq is working out well with the 0-2 Cavaliers…

Mt. View, 0-7, has started a season 0-7 seven times before in 38 years of varsity football. Five of those times they have gone winless the entire season (1972, 1978, 1983, 1993, & 1994). In 1982 they started the season 0-8 before beating El Monte 3-0. In 1977 they started the season 0-7 and defeated the Lions 21-14 in week eight.

I’m so done with Brett Favre drama and the BIG RETURN to Green Bay this Sunday…a rerun of Three’s Company, potentially, is more entertaining…Potentially because I like Aaron Rodgers and he needs to throw the ball to Greg Jennings more often…

(Jennings being on my fantasy team has nothing to do with this…)

Just because you might be into it; October 22, 2004.

That’s the answer to the question: “When was the last time Hoover scored a point against Muir?”

Since a 34-12 victory in 2004, the Mustangs have beaten the Tornadoes; 57-0 (2005), 49-0 (2006), 48-0 (2007), 47-0 (2008), and 25-0 last night.

Baldwin Park has reached seven wins fourth time this decade, and should garner its eighth next week against Ganesha. The big deal for James Heggins’ Braves will not only be beating San Dimas in two weeks and taking the Valle Vista for the first time this decade, but getting a playoff win for the first time since the 1990’s. BP is currently 0-5 in CIF this century.

Last Add BP: The elbow and whispers we are getting in the side from onlookers is concern the Braves running game isn’t strong enough. They love the terror of wide receiver Christian Lazaro (35-catches, 9 Tds), but worry a more explosive team could put them behind the eight ball early in a contest. Thus the fear of San Dimas.

I’ve learned another lesson in the fall of 2009. Don’t pick against Cal. Could an MVP argument in the Southeast be made for tailback Terris Jones?

My one hesitation tonight regarding the Condors is will Pioneer drink from the same magic waters it drank from before defeating La Serna last week? The week prior the Lancers had beaten Santa Fe.

Steven Del Villar is throwing the rock around for the Titans.

Question: Is Cal High sophomore Justin Dankert the son of former Mt. View HC Joe Dankert?

For those needing to know, Joe Dankert led the Vikings to back to back playoff appearances in 1987 and 1988. View only has four playoff appearances in its history. The last coming in 1997 under Frank Alonzo, the first in 1979 under Chuck Magnuson.

They’ve lost them all.

Speaking of 1979 and deceased schools during this Halloween season, it was Royal Oak who defeated the Vikings in that first playoff game 39-14.

Speaking of View: Whatever happened to Carlos Polanco, a pretty good tailback for the Vikes in 2001 & 2002?

Stay thirsty my friends…
