(Whittier) – La Salle exploded for eight runs in the first inning and went on to cruise to a 12-0 rout of Arroyo Saturday in the Whittier Tournament.

The game was called after five innings due to time limit. Paula Damas pitched all five for the Lancers and shut out the Lady Knights. She struck out eight and allowed just three hits. Arroyo never got a runner past second base and that happened only once in the fourth inning.

With Damas doing the work in the circle, the Lancer offense put the game away early. Beverly Valerio led off the first inning with a single and stole second but with two outs she was still out there. Then the roof caved in on Arroyo.

Caroline Knop and Lauren Gomez both walked to load the bases and Damas hit a goundball that the shortstop was unable to handle and the first run scored. That was the only run that the Lancers needed but they were just getting started. Vanessa Dwyer lined a single to right, Alexi Zate laced a base hit to center and Kolby Deziel walked to scored three more runs. On Valerio’s second at bat of the inning she singled to left to plate two more. Kennedy Cribbs followed with a shot over the head of the center fielder for a double and two more runners danced home. By the time the dust had settled La Salle had a crazy eight on the board. Eight was more than enough.

In the third inning Cribbs jumped on a pitch and deposited it over the fence in centerfield with Valerio aboard for a two run home run. Cribbs finished the game with three hits (two for extra bases), four RBI and a run scored. Valerio also had a big day, playing the role of leadoff hitter to perfection with three hits, three runs scored and a pair of ribbies.

The power display continued in the fifth inning when Knop nearly duplicated Cribbs’ feat with a bomb  over the centerfield fence with Kinsley Washington on base. The two run missile rounded out the scoring for the Lancers.

La Salle had 13 hits overall. Rebecca Barber had two hits for Arroyo and Cynthia McKeehan had the other but that’s all the Lady Knights could muster against Damas. Damas also contributed a pair of hits at the plate.
