Chiefs Title Chances Stay Alive Win at El Rancho

(Pico Rivera) – Junior quarterback Andrfew Rincon stepped up for an injured Alex Flores and kept Santa Fe’s hopes alive for another Del Rio League title with a 21-3 victory over El Rancho Friday night at Don Memorial Stadium,

The Chiefs (6-2, 2-1) had little trouble in containing the Dons (4-4, 1-2) after Rincon settled into his new role as Chiefs’ signal caller. The junior went 13 for 21 and threw for 222 yards. He threw three touchdowns and one interception in his firstr game as satarting quarterback.

After a scoreless first quarter, Santa Fe opened the score as Rincon found Cameron Oliver from 110 yards out with 9:26 left in the half. After forcing El Rancho to punt, Rincon thre another score, this time an 87-yard strike to Andrew Jackson. Jackson was money in the bank for the Chiefs, cathing four passes for 127 yards.

El Rancho had a golden opportunity to score a touchdown after Anthony Ayala intercepted Rincon and returned the ball to th Santa Fe 22. However, a halfback option pass from Art Franco to Ayala was nullified by an ineligible receiver downfield penalty called on the Dons. Lenny Leyva ended up kicking a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the half for their only score.

Rincon would score one final time midway through the fourth quarter as Rincon hit Roman Meza with a 10-yard touchdown. On the ground, William Bomer led the ground game with nine carries for 42 yards, While Oliver contributed 36 yards on seven carries, as well as five catches for 63 yards, including his touchdown.

El Rancho travels to Whittier District Field for a Thursday night match up against La Serna, while Santa Fe comes in the following night to take on current Del Rio leader California in a game that could decide the title. The Condors can claim the Del Rio League crown with a victory over the Chiefs, but a Chiefs win could throw the league title race into disarray, depending on the outcome of La Serna’s game against El Rancho.
