(Arcadia) – Sophomore pitcher Paula Damas masterfully breezed through her first six innings with eight strikeouts and just one interruption in 19 batters faced to lead La Salle to a 3-2 win over St. Joseph Monday.
Damas’ only interruption was a one out 4th inning base hit by Giana Lopez. She then weathered three hit, two run, and one error fueled rally from St Joseph and ultimately escaped with a complete game win thanks to a sharp play by… Lauren Gomez (3B), whose throw across the circle to Caroline Knop (1B) stranded a potential tying run on second and succeeded for the game’s final out to ice the win. La Salle improved to 14-7 and 4-6 in the Del Rey League while St. Joseph dropped to 14-12 and 5-7. Caroline Knop “C.K” (2-3, 2 RBIs) came through twice against two outs, lacing an RBI infield single to score Beverlee Valerio (1-3, run, BB, SB) in the 1st before poking a full count pitch over the shortstop in the 5th that sent Kinsley Washington (1-4, 2 SB, run) across, for a 2-0 lead.Gomez (1-1, run, BB) led off the 6th with a walk and advanced to second base as Michelle (Shelly) Encinas (1-1) came off the bench for an infield single before scoring what proved to be a decisive run for the Lancers thanks to a throwing error that occurred after a bunt single by Valerio. The Jesters rallied in the 7th with two runs against two outs on RBI singles from Erica Wendt (scored Ally Painter) and Olivia Campion (Wendt).
