La Puente Steams by SV

(Baldwin Park)-Garrett Hrey threw for two touchdowns, James Fernandez finished with three more and the La Puente Warriors took care of business on the road, defeating Sierra Vista 41-7 in a Montview league match up Friday night.

La Puente (7-2,4-1) will play Gladstone next week for its last league game in a match to determine second place in the Montview and a possible share of the league title if Azusa loses to Workman.

The Warriors started off the scoring barrage with multi-threat receiver Fernandez, who took a handoff and raced past defenders 29-yards untouched into the end zone to cap a six-play opening drive.

Junior running back Jose Perez rushed 10 times for 122-yards and a score. Perez broke loose on a 66-yard scamper, zig zagging his way to the end zone with out being touched and extending the lead to 14-0 with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter.

Hrey’s second touchdown on the night was a 50 yard bomb to Giovanni Rosales, which put LP up 21 -0 early in the second quarter.

The senior Fernandez, 9 carries for 104-yards rushing, added a 25-yard touchdown reception when Hrey hit him in stride down the seam with two minutes to go in the first half.

“The kids have bought in since day one when I got here,” said La Puente coach Brandon Rohrer. “They learned that it takes hard work to get these wins.”

Sierra Vista (4-5,2-4) could not establish a running game and was victim to a lot of drop passes when forced to throw.

Dons quarterback Mark Perez only completed 9 of 25 passes for 87-yards, one touchdown and one interception. The lone touchdown came after the S.V defense forced an LP fumble. Jose Maldonado caught the 9-yard fade pass from Perez in the end zone, but it was little too late for the Dons.

Sierra Vista takes on Firebaugh next week for their last game of the season in a non league match.

“It’s not always about records, but who ever is peaking at the right time, we talked to them about that,” said Rohrer as LP looks for a win against Gladstone next week. “We just got to take care of business ourselves.”
