Schurr Secures its Seventh

By Josh Ouellette

(Montebello) The Spartans got it done winning their seventh Almont League title Friday night with a 38-6 victory over Bell Gardens.

The Lancers, (6-4, 2-3), received the ball and started to drive downfield with a chunk of the yardage coming from a 23 yard run by Daniel Vargas. They were halted by the hard-hitting tackling of the Schurr (8-1-1, 5-0) defense and were forced to punt.

On the Spartans first offensive play of the game Schurr quarterback Aaron Cantu (18 of 25 for 303 yards and five touchdowns) found Carlos Arredondo on a 15-yard slant that resulted in an 88-yard touchdown.

Schurr’s explosive passing game was on display as Cantu found Angel Sanchez on consecutive possessions from 15 and 31 yards out. The scoring was set up by Nicholas Castillo’s ability to carry the ball and set up the play action pass.

The Lancers finally got on the board as Justin Munoz scored from one yard out capping a 12 play, 65 yard drive.

Sanchez hit a 34 yard field goal giving in the closing seconds of the first half to give the Spartans an 18 point lead at the half.

Schurr started the scoring in the second half with a 14 yard pass again to Sanchez. The Spartans scored again on an 18 yard pass to Arredondo who finished with eight receptions for 174 yards and two touchdowns.

This all happened before the fourth quarter started as the three were relieved before the end of the third quarter.

Schurr rolls on to be one of the top seeded teams in the Southeast division of the CIF playoffs.
