South Hills Edges Bonita

By Corey Kwok

(Covina District Field) – Jamel Hart scored the game winning touchdown from 15 yards out shortly into the fourth quarter to cap a 7 play, 80 yard march and South Hills went on to beat Bonita 28-21 Friday night in first round of the CIF Southeast Playoffs.

Huskie defenders repeatedly hassled Bearcat quarterback Garrett Pendleton as he was sacked seven times. Defensive ends Josh Wiley and Randal Varela each dropped two pancakes apiece; followed by a solo from Ronnie Tennell, along with a share by nose tackle Peter Nonu and defensive back Alec Griffin.

Bonita was a non-factor with the run and finished with a total of minus 13 yards. Pendlelton, however, managed to deliver two touchdown passes throwing for 160 yards on 13 of 33 attempts.

Daylight opened for Geoffrey Vaughns with regularity as he dashed 55 yards to pay dirt, converted a screen pass from Vincent Hernandez for a 50 yard gain before scoring twice more from one and 49 yards out on the ground. South Hills jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Vaughns finished with another huge night racking up 235 yards on 30 carries for three touchdowns in addition to the lone catch for a total of 285 on offense. Hart added a one-two punch rushing for 130 yards on 21 attempts.

Deron Holmes took a Pendleton screen 32 yards to the house as Bonita got on the board with just 1:02 left in the first half.

The Bearcat momentum carried over into the third quarter where the Huskies began to unravel, managing only 10 net yards on their first three series while losing two fumbles that led to two Bonita touchdowns and a tied score.

South Hills fumbled the ball away on an exchange on a first and ten from its own five yard line. Erik Le Vay dove on it in the end zone, inching Bonita to within 21-14.

An Evan Highley punt was downed at the one and the Dawgs coughed it up again, giving the Cats a first and goal at the two. Highley punted eight times for 349 yards with six of those boots going for 40 or longer inside the opponent’s 20. Two plays later Pendleton found a wide open Josh Yepez for a five yard score right below the uprights to even it at 21.

Hernandez played quarterback for South Hills in place of the injured Jacob Shirley. Shirley should be back next week.
