(Downey) The Downey Vikings scored 21 unanswered points to storm back from 10-0 deficit and defeat the Dominguez Dons 21-10 Friday night and win the San Gabriel Valley League crown.The Vikings were without starting running back Justin Huff who was resting a sore ankle that was re-injured in last weeks game. Daevon Vigilant filled in brilliantly for Huff leading the team in rushing and scoring three times.
Dominguez’s three headed rushing attack of Keith Hairston, Leon Scott, and Joshua Ford ran early and often with Hairston putting the first points on the board with 2:28 left in the first quarter on a five yard run.
Sergio Odones added a 23-yard field goal to push the lead to 10 after a seven play drive stall for the Dons at the Downey six yard line.
From there the rest of the game belong to the Vigilant and the Vikings.
*** Dominguez amassed a total of 348-yards rushing.
*** Downey gained 213 total yard on the ground.
*** Don quarterback had a forgettable night passing with no completions in six attempts with two interceptions.
*** Viking quarterback Trevor Hill hit on 7 of 17 passes for 134-yards
*** Hill’s favorite target on the night was Stacy Chukwumezie who caught three for 119-yards
*** Vigilant carried the ball 15 times for 128-yards and the three scores.
*** Dominguez’s Hairston lead all ball carriers on the night with 191-yards on 24 carries.
*** Opening the holes up front for Downey were LT Gio Deloera, LG Angel Baez, C Jacob Garcia, RG Polo Makaafi, and RT Jose Casteneda.
*** In the trenches for Dominguez was LT Kalan Henry, LG Ioane Niupulusu, C Tanner Luatua, RG Francisco Mendoza, and RT Benito Munoz.
*** Since both teams have qualified for the post season, they will await Sunday’s pairing to find out who they will play inĀ the first round of the Southeast Division playoffs.
