The NFL

The NFL

By Joe Torosian

Isn’t it time for the NFL Network to start showing all of the old Super Bowl game films and the America’s Game series? I look forward to this every year. I think it’s the music.

Packers and Colts would have a real old school NFL feel in the title game. We’d see endless highlights of Starr, Unitas, Lombardi, yada, yada, yada…That’s why I’m glad it is going to be Seattle versus New England.

Preview and predictions, later in the week.

NFL Draft Considerations:
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Need a quarterback Jameis Winston? Marcus Mariota? Trade out?

2. Tennessee Titans: Safe to say Jake Locker hasn’t worked out. Charlie Whitehurst, David Whitehurst, Bruce Hurst…none of these guys are the answer.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: The sheet says the Jags need a pass rusher, but it seems like they need a whole lot of everything.

4. Oakland Raiders: The sheet says the Raiders need receiving help. If I’m GM Reggie McKenzie I ask Derek Carr if he wants someone to throw the ball to or someone who might extend his life in the NFL…and offensive lineman.

5. Washington: Looked at the wants list and didn’t see quarterback listed. Doesn’t this seem like the kind of place Peyton Manning should finish his career?

6. New York Jets: New head coach Todd Bowles is dealing with the question every Jet HC since Weeb Eubanks has: Who’s my quarterback? Al Woodall? Richard Todd? Matt Robinson? Etc. Etc.

7. Chicago Bears: The sheet says offensive tackle, the flipside says a shrink for Jay Cutler.

8. Atlanta Falcons: This defense stinks…get a pass rusher.

9. New York Giants: Draft an offensive lineman, a good one, and then find out if Eli Manning’s best days are behind him.

10. St. Louis Rams: Always down with the get down of drafting offensive linemen…I say they should and then see if Peyton Manning wants to come in at a discount and throw to some talented receivers.

Hall of Fame Finalists
Morten Andersen: A kicker…Not now, not ever!
Jerome Bettis: Eventually…yes.
Tim Brown: NOW
Don Coryell: He deserves a spot, but I don’t know if he’ll get it.
Terrell Davis: NOW
Tony Dungy: Nope
Kevin Greene:…Not now
Charles Haley: NOW
Marvin Harrison: Eventually…yes.
Jimmy Johnson: Two Super Bowls, but what did he do in Miami? Tom Flores won two Super Bowls, George Seifort won two Super Bowls.
John Lynch: Eventually…yes.
Orlando Pace: Eventually…yes.
Junior Seau: NOW…Personally I thought Seau was a bit overrated, but that’s heresay now.
Will Shields: Eventually…yes.
Kurt Warner: NOW

Coaches Here/Coaches There

The New York Jets and Todd Bowles (Arizona DC) have agreed to a four-year contract to make Bowles the head coach. COMMENT: There’s something cursed about the Jets, I wouldn’t go there unless I had a quarterback coming with me instead of trying acquire one after I get there.

The Jets have hired Mike Maccagnan as its new general manager. COMMENT: Jets GMs come and go faster Cardinals quarterbacks.

Former New York Jets HC Rex Ryan is now leading the Buffalo Bills. Former Detroit Lions HC Jim Schwartz has been given the boot by Buffalo as its defensive coordinator. Ryan has brought in former Jets DC Dennis Thurman as the Bills new DC. Ryan as also hired Greg Roman, the former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator, as his new OC. COMMENT: Why on earth would you hire Rex Ryan and his cronies? The fact that Ryan was appealing to the Bills probably explains why Doug Marrone wanted out of Buffalo.

The Oakland Raiders are leaning towards hiring former Denver Broncos DC/Jacksonville HC Jack Del Rio. COMMENT: What would be worse than hiring Rex Ryan? Hiring Del Rio.

Detroit DC Teryl Austin has intereviewed with Chicago, will interview with Denver, and had a second interview with the Atlanta Falcons. COMMENT: Remember when everybody wanted Marvin Lewis, Lovie Smith, heck even Dave Wannstedt, Buddy Ryan, and Bill Arnsparger…There’s always a hot DC out there, and what has Austin really accomplished?

Former Broncos HC John Fox and Bills HC Doug Marrone (also interviewed in Atlanta) have interviewed in Chicago. COMMENT: Go Marrone.

Former Raiders HC Dennis Allen has interviewed with the New York Giants about getting their vacant DC position. Pepper Johnson (Buffalo defensive line coach) and Steve Spagnuolo (Baltimore defensive backs coach) have interviewed for the job. COMMENT: Isn’t it time for someone to be interviewing for Coughlin’s job?

San Diego Chargers linebacker coach Joe Barry is the leading candidtate to become the Washington Redskins new defensive coordinator. Former DC Jim Haslett was shown the door at the end of the regular season. COMMENT: This could be a really good hire.

Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers assistant Keith Butler is the team’s new DC, replacing the departing Dick LeBeau. COMMENT: It was time.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired former Atlanta OC Dirk Koetter as its new OC. The Buccs previously interviewed former Bears HC Marc Trestman, who is now interviewing with the Cleveland Browns. COMMENT: I’m shaking, I’m shaking…yawn.

Rumor has former Browns OC Kyle Shanahan coming to the St. Louis Rams in the same capacity. COMMENT: I was of a mind that anything would be an upgrade from Brian Schottenheimer, but now I don’t know. Can somebody, hire somebody, who didn’t have a dad coach in the NFL?

The Atlanta Falcons are set to have a second interview with Seattle Seahawks DC Dan Quinn today. Quinn has also been rumored for Chicago, Denver and San Francisco. COMMENT: Now this guy has done something.
