The Peterson Principle: 1/19/15

I’ll be the first to admit that it’s tough to get up for high school basketball – especially here in the San Gabriel Valley. The football season ends in December with all of the division championship games and then you’re getting ready for the holidays. There are tournaments going on but the start times are all over the place and the locations are anywhere from San Diego to Las Vegas.

But if you do get a chance to get out to a game go see Maranatha. Specifically go see guard Tyler Dorsey. You’ve probably already heard about the St. John Bosco transfer. He’s been getting plenty of ink. Tuesday night I got the chance to see him live and in person. Let’s just say it was worth the drive to Pasadena.

He plays guard for Tim Tucker but the truth is he could play anywhere. He can handle the ball and shoot the three with anybody so he plays guard. But at 6′ 5” and an athlete with a post up moves he can also play forward. With hops that are better than anybody else on the floor, he could play center…at least on the high school level.

Dorsey scored from the perimeter, from the paint and all points in between in the win over Village Christian. He ended up with 42 points and took over the game in the fourth quarter with 18 points. He almost turned Village Christian’s Bennie Boatwright, who has committed to USC, into an after thought.

He’s getting plenty of D-1 looks. He was an early commit last year to Arizona but has changed his mind and has yet to make his decision. Connecticut head coach Kevin Ollie was out to see him last week. If you live in the SGV Maranatha in Pasadena is a short drive. Check the schedule and go take a look. Dorsey is well worth your time. Also you’ll hear one of the best Public Address announcers in the business in Corey “Corn Dog” Kwok.

It was a surprise to see UCLA’s Ellis McCarthy make himself available for the NFL Draft. It seems like just yesterday that I saw him playing D-line for Monrovia. Did you know that as a tall skinny kid he played basketball for the Wildcats as a sophomore? Good luck in the NFL Ellis. Your time is now.

I expected Trojans Nelson Agholor, Leonard Williams and Buck Allen to make the leap to the NFL but George Farmer? It seemed like with Agholor gone 2015 was going to be his time to shine.

You think being a high school football head coach isn’t a 12 month a year job? Arroyo HC Jim Singiser told me that the SGV Shootout info already goes out next week and two teams are already in. The tournament is in July.

That’s a bitter pill to swallow for Green Bay but when you don’t make plays down the stretch (two point conversion, onside kick) you’re going to lose.

We knew the Patriots were favored but it was disappointing to see the Colts not even compete.

I already spotted a brand new Russell Wilson jersey. Expect to see a lot more over the next couple of weeks.

That’s my principle.
