The Peterson Principle: 2/23/15

This one caught me surprise. Some coaching changes you can see coming from a mile away. Didn’t we hear the rumors about San Dimas Coach Bill Zernickow resigning for the last three years? Maybe we didn’t hear he was going to Oregon but we thought a move as inevitable.

I think the Marco Ramirez rumors began back in September. When the move was finally announced the drama was pretty much over.

But when Daniel Algattas pulled the plug after one year at Baldwin Park last week, yeah that surprised me. I guess with the many resignations we have every off season, it seems to be increasing every year, it shouldn’t be a surprise but it was. Algattas is young, energetic, and was pumped to get his first head coaching job. So you knew burn out or fatigue wouldn’t be an issue. I envisioned Algattas going on an eight to ten year run, then maybe leaving for a higher profile coaching position.

When he gave me the reasons it made sense. He received an offer he couldn’t refuse. An opportunity that was a promotion and one that might not be there in the future. It wasn’t a coaching position but one that was in education. After talking it over with is his wife he decided to take it. Had he stayed he wouldn’t have been able to devote the time needed to coach football. So it made sense to make the move now. He probably would have been foolish not to. I just didn’t see it coming.

Where does Baldwin Park go now? The Braves are coming off of a year in which they made the playoffs and took second in league. They have great facilities. It could be a good gig or somebody. Would James Heggins consider a comeback? I’m hearing no but thought I’d throw it out there.

Speaking of Zernickow, I wasn’t totally shocked to see him leave the golden state for greener pastures up north. But how did he get all those assistants to relocate to Oregon? Brian Mustain, Dillon Corona, Jake Barbosa and JT Rentschler are all heading to Tualatin High School with him. Talk about loyalty. No this doesn’t mean we’ll be expanding our coverage area.

Based on the numbers we saw for some of the running backs this week at the NFL Combine it’s even harder to believe that Azusa Pacific’s Terrell Watson wasn’t invited. D-2 Offensive Player of the Year? Over 2100 yards rushing? Close to 4000 yards in the last two years? Yeah, this Watson guy just isn’t that good.

I’m not really up on Oscar nominated movies these days but wasn’t “Birdman” the life story of the former power forward for the Denver Nuggets/Miami Heat?
