(Pasadena) – Maranatha fell behind 15-8 in the first quarter and never recovered falling to Crespi 65-52 Wednesday night in the third round of the State Tournament.

The Celts played a suffocating brand of defense that had the Minutemen frustrated for most of the night. They were still up by seven at the half but opened it up in the third quarter with a 9-2 run to go up by 14. De’Anthony Melton had eight points in the third for Crespi and led the way with 21 overall. The Celts were still up by 13 at the end of three, extended it to 17 in the fourth before settling for the 13 point victory.

Tyler Dorsey led Maranatha with 25 but it was a tough 25. 12 of those points came in the fourth quarter when the Minutemen were in dire straits. Tey Williams was the only other player in double digits for Tim Tucker’s crew as he scored 10.

Melton drove the lane and flipped in a lay-up with 4:30 left in the third to give the Celts a 42-28 lead in what looked like a back breaker.

However after another Crespi score the Minutemen had one last push left. Dorsey canned a jumper and when Williams completed a three point play off a drive and a bucket it was an 8-0 run and Maranatha was suddenly down just eight with 2:46 left in the third.

The Celts, as they had been doing all night answered right back. They ran off the next eight points with Melton capping it on a drive and a score and just like that it was 52-36 wth a minute left in the quarter.

Dorsey willed his way to a 12 point fourth quarter in an attempt to keep Maranatha alive but it wasn’t to be despite the roar of the home court standing room only crowd.

Taj Regans hit a couple of key free throws for Crespi in the fourth and finished with 16 overall in support of Melton. Brandon Williams, only a freshman, was also in doubles with 10.

Dorsey and Williams had 35 of Maranatha’s 52 but after that it dropped off. Sean Romero hit two threes and had six and Zach Smalley had five.

The Minutemen still have a CIF title to brag about beating Campbell Hall earlier this month. They knocked off Paciifc Ridge and Chaminade before falling to Crespi.
