Galaxy Loses Late in DC

LA GALAXYBy Tim Peterson

(Washington, DC) – Chris Pontius took a cross from Nick Deleon at the far post, outwrestled Dan Gargan and drove a header into the back of the net  in stoppage time to give DC United a 1-0 win over the Galaxy Saturday night.

The Galaxy had their chances. Mika Vayrynen had a free kick that skimmed inches wide of the far post eight minutes in. Five minutes later, Stefan Ishizaki’s shot on goal was turned away for DC goalkeeper Bill Hamid. Alan Gordon also had a golden opportunity at the end of the first half  when he got off a shot off of an Ishizaki cross but Hamid again made the save. D.C. had a few chances of their own but were unable to get the ball by LA goalkeeper Brian Rowe until Pontius converted late.

LA played without Robbie Keane, who took part in Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland and Gyasi Zardes who is with the U.S National team. It’s the first time D.C United has beaten the Galaxy in over six years.

The Galaxy fell to 1-1-2 with the loss. Next up for Bruce Arena’s crew is a date at Vancouver next Saturday.
