La Canada Stays Unbeaten in Tournament Opener

(El Monte, Ca) – La Canada advanced to the second round of the Arroyo Lady Knights Tournament with a convincing 61-24 victory over Charter Oak.

“They are a good team,” said Lady Chargers head coach Keisa Pineda.  “I felt we needed to play a perfect game to beat them.  I think in the first half we competed.  We just didn’t take care of the ball.”

The Lady Spartans were able to blow the game open in the second quarter when they closed the half on a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 17 points.

Senior Courtney McCutchan poured in 21 points with 17 coming in the first half to lead the Lady Spartans in scoring.  Tia Chen added 19 points, while also leading the team with four assists.

“This was Courtney’s welcome back game,” said La Canada head coach Tamar Hill.  “She has been solid for us.  It is nice to see Courtney back to her usual self.”

The Lady Chargers (2-5) committed 25 turnovers in the loss and are now relegated to playing in the loser’s bracket for the remainder of the tournament.

Charter Oak was led by Melissa Suarez’s 13 points on the evening.

La Canada (7-0) will face host Arroyo (4-3) in the second round on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
