Lady Spartans Put the Lady Knights on Ice

(El Monte, Ca) – La Canada used a 19-point outburst in the third quarter to advance to the semi-final game of the Lady Knights Tournament with a 46-26 win over host Arroyo.

“In the first quarter we ran our plays and got some easy buckets,” said Lady Spartans head coach Tamar Hill.  “I think we got a little lackadaisical in our defense in the second quarter. We let Arroyo stay close in the first half and then Shannon and Courtney took over.”

The Lady Spartans put the clamps on the Lady Knights offense with a suffocating defense that saw a five point halftime lead expand to 22 when the third quarter horn blew.

A steady dose of Shannon Denney and Courtney McCutchan was what La Canada needed in the third quarter as they scored all 19 points in the quarter.

Arroyo was unable to answer the onslaught as they went cold from the floor after Joanna Reyes (8 points) opened the half with a field goal.   It was the last time they would score from the field for the next 13 minutes as they missed their next 14 shots.

“I thought we had six or seven shots that went in and out,” said Lady Knights head Coach Mike Gorball.  “We gave them way too many easy baskets in the third quarter.”

With 1:43 remaining in the game, Angelica Ruedas made a field goal for Arroyo to end the streak of missed field goals.

The Lady Knights fortunes weren’t always bad in the game as they began the game four of five and opened up a five-point lead to go up 7-2 early.

The Lady Spartans would answer with a 15-4 run to end the first quarter.

Denney led La Canada with 23 points on the evening and McCutchan ended the night with 14 points.
