Lancers Withstand Rush Hour Pace In Win

(El Monte, Ca) – Bishop Amat is headed to the Lady Knights Tournament semi-finals after out running Sierra Vista for four quarters with a 70-39 win.

The Lancers were able to withstand a helter-skelter pace that was set by the Lady Dons the entire night with end to end action.

“We like to play fast,” said Bishop Amat head coach Richard Wiard.  “Sierra Vista likes to play faster than we do.  You could see that in the second quarter.  We don’t mind running up and down as we have some skilled players.”

Bishop Amat had five players in double-digits in scoring and led by Arielle Wideman’s 15 points.

Sierra Vista tried to keep it close after being outscored 19-4 in the first five minutes of the game by outscoring the Lancers 17-15 in the remainder of the half.

“I told the girls to keep fighting,” said Lady Dons head coach Keith Locklear.  “We aren’t going to lie down against anyone and we will battle the entire night.”

The 13-point deficit that the Lady Dons had at the half was a close as they would get as Bishop Amat was able to blow the game open with a 23-point quarter.  Much of the offense in the quarter was done by Wideman’s seven points, Aundrea Villanueva’s six points and Gina Henderson’s five points.

The Lady Dons were unable to get on track in the second half as they were unable to make a basket to answer and stop the Lancer scoring run.

The final quarter saw the reserves come in for Bishop Amat as they had already built their lead to 57-30.

Sierra Vista was led by Estrella Rivera who had 12 points.

The Lancers will now meet La Canada for a spot in the Lady Knights Tournament final on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
