(Monrovia) – What looked to be a walk in the park for Monrovia, turned into a complete nightmare as Burbank rebounded from an early mistake to upset the Wildcats, 38-20.

The Bulldogs used a three-headed running attack of Darnell Williams, Nicolas Warren and Jake Kelley to wear down Monrovia’s linemen in the unbearable heat. Williams finished the night with a team-high 126 yards on 16 carries.

Burbank quarterback Guy Gibbs finally settled down in the second half as he found Max Weisman for touchdowns of 17 and 28 yards. The second touchdown connection all but sealed the win for the Bulldogs.

The Wildcats never were able to get into a rhythm in part to the Burbank’s swarming defense. The only bright offensive spark for Monrovia was after falling behind 24-13, Asaph Zamora connected with Aubrey Mosley for a 76-yard touchdown completion.

QUICK HITS:

  • Gibbs first play from scrimmage was a pass that was intercepted by Mosley at the Burbank 25-yard line and returned to the six-yard line. Mosley scored two plays later.
  • Mosley ran for 94 yards on the night and Lawrence Spicer contributed 59 yards as well.
  • Spicer led the Wildcats with four receptions on the night.
  • How bad was it for Monrovia? In the second quarter facing a punting situation, the Wildcats committed a bad snap that was recorded as a 34-yard loss and resulted in a Burbank score two plays later.
  • Jonathan McKee scored the final touchdown on a 95-yard kickoff return.
  • The Bulldogs sacked Zamora four times on the evening.
  • Kelley scored from four-yards and two-yards out.
  • Burbank scored 24 unanswered points before Monrovia responded.
  • Nicolas Warren ran for 58 yards and Andrew Reyes had 17 yards.
  • Teams combined were 17 of 46 passing for 110 yards.
  • The teams also combined for 27 penalties for 209 yards. A roughing the kicker penalty by Monrovia led to the Bulldogs extending their drive. It was punctuated by a Burbank touchdown to take a 7-6 lead.
