(West Covina)—A physical first half wore down both teams but it was West Covina that held on while South Hills cracked in the Bulldogs 27-7 victory on Saturday night at Covina District Field. The victory gave WestCo the “King of Cameron” trophy for the second year in a row.

The Huskies offense moved the ball, but couldn’t make the big play when they had to. Three times in the first half they moved into scoring position only to turn the ball over on downs, have a field goal attempt blocked, and then lose the ball on a fumble.

West Covina didn’t fare much better. At least until its final offensive play in the first half when Aaron Mc Corkle fired a lateral out to Joseph Barcena, who then connected on a 55-yard touchdown pass to Quintos Alton.

In the second half the Huskies offensive struggles continued as the Bulldogs took control of the line of scrimmage for several of its runners and to give time to Mc Corkle. The senior quarterback completed 11 of 19 passes for 174 yards. Six of those completions went to Anthony Parada.

WestCo scored twice in the third quarter. Mike Gomez went in on a 5-yard run to make it 14-0 and Kevin Thomas went in from 8-yards off left tackle to make the score 20-7.

South Hills lone score came after it turned the ball over on downs at the Bulldogs four with 4:19 left in the third quarter. West Covina fumbled the ball back to the Huskies on the next play and they cashed in a moment later on Ryan Torres’ 9-yard touchdown run.

Gomez closed the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 57-yard touchdown run that saw him zig right toward the WestCo sideline and then zag left to the middle of the field and daylight.

Both teams are now 1-2.
