(San Dimas)— Led by Jarell Sykes’ three touchdown performance, the San Dimas Saints overcame a 21-13 deficit in the second half to beat visiting California 28-21 Thursday night at San Dimas High School.

With 4:13 in the third quarter, the Saints backed the Condors to their one yard line. Quarterback Evan Barajas fumbles the hand off in the end zone but recovered it for a safety. Cal lead 21-15 late in the third quarter.

Following the safety free kick, San Dimas and Sykes took four plays and 1:31 to march down the field to take a 22-21 lead with 2:42 in the third. The SD offense ran four straight running plays, all by Sykes who ultimately scored on a 19-yard trap play.

California tried to answer back on its ensuing possession, but the Saints defense led by Joey Erickson crowded the line of scrimmage and forced back to back incompletions in the series, forcing the Condors to punt.

San Dimas tried to extend its lead midway through the fourth but a holding penalty on second and 11 pushed them back 10-yards. Deciding not to punt on fourth and 12, quarterback Joey Tamayo completed his pass to Edward Siapno for a short 3-yards and turned the ball over to the Condors.

When Cal took over on the 17 they were able to move the ball effectively with running backs Robert Leos and Andrew Reyes. Both backs were able to pick up positive yards in the series. However, the drive was derailed by the SD defense who forced another turnover on downs.

Two plays later Sykes took the handoff and busted through Cal’s defense and scored on a 57-yard run with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter. The Saints missed the point after attempt and led 28-21.

The Condors tried to force overtime but again the SD defense forced four straight incomplete passes and took over on downs with 14 seconds left in the game.

In the first half, the Cal offense was able to compile scoring drives to put them up 14-0. Barajas and Leos both scored rushing touchdowns to start the game.

San Dimas scored their first touchdown in the second quarter when Tamayo connected with Nathan Reep on a streak for a 60-yard touchdown. When the Saints recovered a Leos fumble, SD took nine plays to end the drive with a Sykes touchdown.

The Condors answered right back when Barajas connected with Ricky Rodriguez for a 79-yard score. California led 21-13 at the half.
