(Whittier) – La Serna jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and rolled to a 42-0 rout of Whittier Thursday night in the Del Rio League opener.

Johnny Ceballos threw four touchdown passes and ran for another – all in the first half. Anthony Garcia scored his second touchdown of the night in the third quarter to make it 42-0. The Lancers used a running clock in the fourth quarter to cruise home from there.

Jonathan Wise had five catches for 105 yards including a 38-yard strike from Ceballos to make it 28-0 in the second quarter.

*** Whittier’s Anthony Rios returned the opening kick off down to the La Serna five-yard line but failed to score.

*** Ceballos completed two consecutive TD strikes in the second quarter to Wise and Ryan Camarillo – 62 yards.

*** After the Cardinals came away with nothing on their first possession the Lancers marched 80 yards down the field and Ceballos capped it with  seven-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

*** Garcia’s second score came on a 10-yard screen pass from Ceballos.

*** Camarillo caught two passes for 99 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

***  Whittier punted four times and turned it over once in the first half.

*** Ceballos other touchdown pass was a nine yard toss to Daniel Cruz late in the first half.

*** Whittier was averaging over 40 points per game coming in.

*** La Serna improves to 4-2 overall and will face El Rancho next week.

*** Whittier falls to 3-3 and will square off against Pioneer next week.
