Oilers Score Big Against Rival Lancers

By Rich Whittington

(Bell Gardens) – Montebello proved to be too much for host Bell Gardens 49-32 Friday night in Almont League action.

The teams pleased the crowd with their ability to strike quick and often. On three different occasions, drives consisted of a single play. The game featured the sort of atmosphere that one would expect from a rivalry contest…gritty offense, stingy defense, and very vocal spectators.

One element of the contest that was not expected was the exorbitant number of penalties. The teams combined for 33 accepted infractions, for a total of 302 yards. This total is what one would expect to see in late August, as opposed to late October. As well as the players played, at times, I’m sure that the main topic at Monday’s practices will be decreasing the number of flags that hit the ground.

  • Montebello: 602 Yards Total Offense
  • Montebello QB Ryan Rivera: 18 of 32 for 337 yards and 2 TD Passes, 20 carries for 124 yards and 1TD Run
  • The score at Halftime: Montebello 27- Bell Gardens 26
  • Turnovers: Bell Gardens 2- Montebello 4
  • Penalties: Montebello 16- Bell Gardens 17
  • Bell Gardens Defense: 2 Interceptions, 2 Fumble Recoveries
  • Montebello’s “O” Line: RT-Luis Lopez, RG-Edgar Pelayo,

C-Carlos Gomez, LG-Christopher Cobos, LT-Ramiro Robles

  • Bell Gardens’ “O” Line: RT-Gerardo Lopez, RG-Guadalupe Arevalos,

C-Leonel Rodas, LG-Daniel Penado, LT-Adrian Medina

  • Montebello is at Alhambra next Friday.
  • Bell Gardens will close out the regular season by hosting the San Gabriel.
