(Burbank)— The Burroughs Indians didn’t defeat the Crescenta Valley Falcons by pass, or run, but by plays. Big plays. The Flatlanders scored three touchdowns of the plus-30 yard variety, a fourth was on a 14-yard run, in a 34-3 route on Friday night.
Following a 14-yard touchdown run by Steven Hubbell in the first, the Indians blew the game open in the second. After an 18-yard run by Chance Bell set up a first and ten at the Falcons 40, Hubbell went over the top to Erick Hernandez for the eleventh time this season.
CV responded by cobbling together a drive that resulted in a 30-yard field goal by Alex Atanackovic to make it 14-3.
The Falcons were back in it?
…Sorry Hans, wrong guess…
Seventeen seconds after Atanackovic’s field goal, Robert Awunganyi returned Atanackovic’s kickoff 99-yards for a touchdown by zig-zagging all the way up the field.
Now it was 21-3 in favor of Burroughs and it was happy trails for the defending Southeast champs.
The Flatlanders defense supported the offense with big plays of its own. Jaret Wrobel picked off Tyler Hill in the end zone in the third quarter, and Connor Garden drove in the dagger with 34-yard pick-six return in the fourth. The Crescenta Valley offense was limited to 161 yards.
The last time the Indians were 8-1 heading into Week Ten was back in 2006 when they routed CV, and Burbank, to finish the regular season 9-1. They had a pretty good running back that year name Iron Joe Wiggan.
